Very early photo of The First Presbyterian Church in Pomona, Calif, corner of Gibbs Street and Holt Ave..Built in 1907, the main church building was destroyed by fire in 1981 and was later rebuilt..This was the church that my family belonged to when I was growing up in Pomona..My mother and grandmother both sang in the church choir and attended the prayer meetings every week and never missed a Sunday going to church and also made us kids do the same------------

I took this photo at eleven years of age while the family was visiting Knott`s Berry Farm in Buena Park, Calif..My mother is on the far left and the two lady friends are looking into the jail at Sad Eyed Joe, who is actually a dummy figure of a man in jail..You can tell the person at the front booth what you want Joe in jail to say to your friend when they go up to the bars of the jail and that is why everyone is cracking up in this photo..Just one of the attractions of Knott`s in the 50s---------

------------------------------------------------------Mel`s Hamburgers once located at Palomares and Holt in downtown Pomona, Calif. back in the 1950`s..It was a popular hangout for school kids..Looking at Pomona today you would never believe how it once was..It was completely the opposite of what it`s like today..The change, I`m afraid to say, has been for the worse!...

----------------------------------------------------Pomona Valley YMCA as it looks still today, built in 1922, it replaced the Palomares Hotel which burned down in 1911..Construction could not begin until after World War One had ended..

Photo was taken shortly after this new building was built on North Garey Avenue in Pomona, California, and replacing the old building at 260 South Thomas Street..
My mother was employed as an insurance clerk here and she is pictured in the second row from the front, the fifth person from the left who is seated behind a desk and she has a white sweater on and wearing glasses...
I might also add that Pomona was a much different (and better) city than it is today at the time of this photo...Today Pomona resembles downtown skid row Los Angeles more than anything else


 

------------------------------------------Johnny Otis who had a number of hit records from the 1940`s to the 1960`s including Harlem Nocturne, Hey, Hey, Hey, Willie and the Hand Jive and many others..Johnny Otis, who is of Greek decent, came before Alan Freed and other disc jockeys who played Black Music..Johnny Otis started the music careers of many well known artists such as Jackie Wilson, Little Richard and many others..Frank Zappa fashioned himself after Johnny Otis and actually met Otis in 1958..Born in Vallejo, Calif. in 1921 Johnny Otis is still going strong at 85 years of age...



 

------------------------------------Pomona High School, built in 1923, being destroyed by fire, May 14, 1956..My brother was in his junior year at this school during this time..Today the high school is located on North Towne Avenue and a shopping center stands in this spot where the old high school once stood and this area is now comparable to downtown Los Angeles Skid Row---------------------

My father took this photo of Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming in the 1930`s..Photography was his hobby and he would always take the family to go camping in Yellowstone before I was even born..I was the youngest of three of his children..While my brother and my older sister were born in Amarillo, Texas, I was born in Fairbury, Nebraska after my mother and father had already split up------------------
